Music from the 1980's often represents a bone of contention for many historically inclined listeners, as the raw soul and experimentation of the '70's gave way to a mechanical kind of beat and aesthetic that forever changed the course of "live" performance. Yet when a DJ is tryin' to get those asses out on the floor, you know he or she is rockin' some '80's-ass shit. So, love it or hate it, you'll be moving and grooving and not giving a good goddamn! Which leads us to One Way, a relatively obscure R&B group from the late '70's/early '80's, and for real--they get DOWN on this 1981 release. A big difference between One Way and many of their peers is their use of an entirely live band, which leads to an uncommon warmth in their sound that goes against the grain of the trends of their time. No sense in going too in-depth--it's '80's club funk and drippy slow jams--pure and simple--and it kills. Drop the needle on "Push"--side 2, cut 1--bask in all its synth-bass-thudding glory--and groove on.
