Cannonball Adderley Quintet: "Inside Straight"
This is by no means a super-rare record, but if you’re a fan of deeply felt soul-jazz, all of the Cannonball albums are worth picking up. Often they feature a mixture of funky grooves and vaguely Latin, exploratory rhythms, although the great thing about the Adderleys is that they were always willing to experiment; throw a bunch of crazy chords and structures at the wall and see what sticks, maybe even toss some wild-ass psychedelic guitar at the folks (courtesy Mike Deasy, on the much harder to find “Soul Zodiac” album). Through it all, Cannonball’s tone on sax remains untouchable, as brother Nat chimes in occasionally with some lines on the cornet. For those open to the experience, listening to the Adderleys is a religious sort of thing—head bobbin’ and body moving as the mind ascends in time with the musicians. Can y’all get to that?
